Recruiting company plans two events in city this year after ‘good feel’ last year
A free career fair for job seekers with a military background will make the first of two Oklahoma City visits March 19, organizers said Wednesday. The RecruitMilitary Career Fair is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 19 at Bricktown’s Coca-Cola Events Center.
The event is for veterans who already have civilian work experience, men and women transitioning from active duty to civilian life, members of the National Guard and reserves and military spouses.
The military-to-civilian recruiting firm RecruitMilitary scheduled job fairs here in 2008, said John Lundberg of the Cincinnati-based career fair company. The first Oklahoma City visit "created a big buzz,” Lundberg said.
“We got a good feel that a lot was happening in this area,” he said.
A year ago, 24 companies signed on for the event, and 285 people attended. A second fair in July featured 40 companies and drew more than 300 job seekers, he said.
“It was an incredible turnout,” Lundberg said.
So far for March, about two dozen companies have signed on, "and there will be plenty more,” Lundburg said. "Even in a tight job market there are people who are hiring and they are looking for good people.”
Company representatives are attracted to MilitaryRecruit’s job fairs because they value the skills and work discipline former and transitioning military personnel offer, he said.
Broken Arrow-based Veeco, a combustion equipment maker, attended an Oklahoma City fair last year, said human resources manager Nicole Urbanavage, and will probably again. "I thought it was very well put together,” she said.
Those who register before the event are directed to companies looking for workers with their skills.
The Oklahoma City hiring event is the 10th of more than 65 scheduled for this year, and attendance is expected to be up.
“More people are showing up this year,” including people already working who just don’t feel secure about their job or what they’re doing, Lundberg explained.
Job seekers and employers can register at no cost at recruitmilitary.com.
